If you had a 5-liter bowl and a 3-liter bowl, and an unlimited access to water, how would you measure exactly 4 liters?
Fill the 5-litre bowl and pour water to the 3-litre bowl, which you empty afterwards. From the 5-litre bowl pour the 2 remaining litres to the 3-litre bowl. Refill the 5-litre bowl and fill in the 3-litre bowl (with 1 litre), so there stay the 4 required litres in the 5-litre bowl.
Maybe you still need an explanation if your head can contain only 2 litres of ideas

A farmer wants to cross the river to go to the market. He has a boat but it is not a very big one. The farmer is going to the market with a dog, a sack of corn, and chicken. The farmer's boat is only big enough to take himself and one of the other things with him across the river. If the chicken is left alone with the corn it will eat the corn. If the chicken is left alone with the dog too, the dog will eat the chicken. Can you think of a way for the farmer to get his sack of corn, his chicken and his dog across the river?
The farmer can take the chicken across first and leave it on the other side of the river. Then crossing back alone, he puts the dog into the boat and crosses with it. Dropping off the dog on the other side of the river, the farmer picks up the chicken, and brings it back to the first side where they all started from. He leaves the chicken there, but he picks up the the sack of corn, and takes the corn across the river and leaves the corn with the dog. Now he can cross the river with the boat, empty again, and get the chicken from the other side and bring it to join the dog and the corn. Done!
